As the name implies, the Patayan baston is a battle stick, pure and simple. Inspired by the fighting sticks of the old Masters it is meant for combat, not training. This one is based on an original in the collection of Guro Kim Satterfield, which was the inspiration and benchmark for all of my baston. The cross section of the baston is an “inverted apple seed” creating a striking edge which is extremely narrow, but strong and reinforced. The tip is a sharp point capable of penetrating ¼” birch plywood with little effort and no damage to the baston. The punyo has been worked to a strong, sharp, chisel-type point facilitating meaningful butt strikes. Although the grip is of a horse-hoof bolo type, I am perfectly happy to create a unique design for each customer including but certainly not limited to cockatao, kris, parang or even pira.

As illustrated in the photos the Patayan baston is 27 ½” overall length with a 19” blade. Because this baston is made to the measurements of the purchaser’s hand it is available only as a custom order. When ordering, please provide measurement from the heel palm to tip of the extended index finger, the width of the palm, the measurement from the tip of the extended thumb to the bottom of the closed fist, and the desired overall length. (See here for details) I will only make this baston from Purpleheart or a similarly hard and durable wood.

There is a choice of 2 finishes; a three coat, hand-rubbed linseed oil finish or hand-rubbed natural bee’s wax. I prefer not to use varnish or any type of shellac on this baston as it is intended for combat and these finishes become slick very quickly. Both the linseed oil and the bee’s wax provide an excellent gripping surface when in contact with the heat of a hand. This is included in the cost of the baston. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.
