Baril Bat'uta A customer and I were talking about Native American gustock clubs and how very functional they were. We came up with the idea for a gunstock-inspired club with a Filipino twist. It came out exactly as we thought - a really effective impact weapon. |
Tagaturo Lock and Block Set Based on the Patayan baston, but with rounder edges so it can be used in training without seriously mangling your training partners. This prototype was made as a gift for Tagaturo Steve Klement. |
Moro Playset The guy who did my website asked me to make a Kris Gunong for his son. It turned out so nice I decided to make a wee Barong to go with it, so next time he plays "Moros and Spaniards" he's sure to be on the winning side! |
Kris and Gunong Set Inspired by a kris from my own collection. Both kris and gunong were hand carved from a single piece of hickory and finished with linseed oil. The heft and balance are quite similar to the steel original. Kris Gunong |
Tuscarora Gunstock Club An interpretation of an illustration found on the Tuscarora Nation home page. Made from hickory and white tailed deer antler, decorated with wild turkey and Canada goose feathers and a horse tail "scalp lock". Overall length: 35" |
Talibon Pictured with the original are the prototype (the dark brown wood) which I carved from a broken cedar canoe paddle blade and the first version in Purple Heart. The Purple Heart version is slightly shorter in blade length to facilitate use in class and to preserve the balance and overall hand-feel of the steel blade. |
RTAK Dagger The steel version was designed by the gentlemen at Randall Adventure Training (http://www.ratcutlery.com/) and is produced by the Ontario Knife Company. This is a big blade! The lads at Randall do a nice job with the design and the Ontario folks build a tough tool! Check them out; they make a sharp edge for every occasion. |
Wenge Set My personal training tools. Due to the growing amount on unlabeled Purple Heart bastons and knives at the Midwest School of Eskrima, I decided to make my set from Wenge. The bolo was copied from a bolo that a friend won in a raffle. |
Baby Baston Made for, and to commemorate the birth of Guro Kim Satterfield's grandson Gabriel Paul, this baston is just over 10" long. Made of mahogany and inscribed with the youngsters initials in pre-Spanish Tagalog.
